Professor William Powrie’s main technical areas of interest are geotechnical transport infrastructure, and sustainable waste and resource management – in both cases underpinned by an understanding of fundamental soil behaviour. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2009 in recognition of his work in these areas. He is a co-author of the recently-updated CIRIA guides to groundwater control (C750) and embedded retaining walls (C760). He played a key role in establishing the Rail Research UK Association, and leads the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Infrastructure Hub and an EPSRC Programme Grant on railway track systems. He is also Geotechnical Consultant to the internationally-leading groundwater control company, WJ Groundwater Ltd.
